Mississippian Discinid Brachiopods Attached to a Soft-bodied Organism

چکیده

A concretion from the lower Mississippian Meadville Shale Member of the Cuyahoga Formation near Lodi, Ohio, preserves a population of Orbiculoidea newberryi Hall in life position, associated with what is interpreted to be an unidentified soft-bodied organism. The brachipods show a diffuse unimodal orientation, parallel to the axis of the "host" organism, in what was probably an upward direction during the life of the group. Recruitment to the assemblage apparently was periodic. Two size classes, perhaps representing yearly recruitment, contain about equal number of individuals. Most individuals were attached to the soft-bodied organism, but six of the nine smaller specimens were attached to adults of the species. The assemblage is similar to recent discinid assemblages from quiet water and suggests a continuity of basic life style throughout a major part of the fossil record.

A soft-bodied lophophorate from the Silurian of England.

Soft-bodied taxa comprise an important component of the extant lophophorate fauna, but convincing fossils of soft-bodied lophophorates are extremely rare. A small fossil lophophorate, attached to a brachiopod dorsal valve, is described from the Silurian (Wenlock Series) Herefordshire Lagerstätte of England. This unmineralized organism was bilaterally symmetrical and comprised a subconical body ...

Epibionts on the lingulate brachiopod Diandongia from the Early Cambrian Chengjiang Lagerstatte, South China.

The classic Chengjiang Lagerstätte (Lower Cambrian, Atdabanian stage: Yu'anshan Formation) Yunnan, southwestern China, has yielded, besides the exceptional and often controversial soft-bodied fossils, a fauna of primitive/early lingulid brachiopods. Diandongia pista (Rong 1974) is one of the commonest and most strongly mineralized of the phosphatic brachiopods from the Lagerstätte. The shells o...

Fenxiang biota: a new Early Ordovician shallow-water fauna with soft-part preservation from China

Our perception of biodiversity in the geological past is incomplete and biased because most organisms did not have mineralized skeletons and therefore had little chance of fossilization. This especially refers to shallow-water marine environments, rarely represented by localities with exceptional preservation of fossil material (known as taphonomic windows or Konservat-Lagerstätten). Such extra...

Wuchiapingian (lopingian, Late Permian) Brachiopods from the Episkopi Formation of Hydra Island, Greece

Twenty-three species of silicified brachiopods are described from four samples in the middle and upper parts of the Episkopi Formation from Hydra Island, Greece. These brachiopods are newly recorded from the region and together with previously described brachiopods from the same localities constitute the most diverse Lopingian (Late Permian) brachiopod fauna reported in southern Europe. The bra...

Fossil Communities of the Borden (Mississippian) Delta in Indiana and Northern Kentucky

The Borden siltstone delta in Indiana and northern Kentucky contains shelly communities that are distinctive with respect to their occurrence in delta platform, delta slope, and prodeltaic environments. Isopach maps of the New Providence Shale and total Borden Group indicate that two distinct lobes of the delta existed in Indiana. The delta platform exhibits the greatest variety of habitats, in...
